When we arrived by way of Damariscotta, what we found can only be described as pure magic in every way. Time has stood still here in all the good ways; the awe-inspiring simplicity of this hidden gem of a house and place is like nothing we have experienced. A classic beauty, this white clapboard cape was built around 1800 along the Sheepscot River which meanders through forest and field, eventually joining the Atlantic ocean. The austere New England architecture is stunning in both form and function; the updates are smart and well-done, ensuring the next stewards will be comfortable to modern standards. Period details have been restored; wide pine floors gleam, decades of paint removed from handmade interior doors with forged latches, hand hewn ceiling beams have been rediscovered. At the same time, the kitchen and bathrooms have been renovated - marrying exquisite, modern styling with period appropriate details. A true chef's kitchen with a Smeg refrigerator, professional Cosmo gas range, Miele dishwasher and stone countertops. The living room, overlooking the river through double french doors, has a new wood burning fireplace. The house is cozy in the winter and cool in the summer thanks to recently installed heat pumps. A whole house generator guarantees power regardless of the weather. Rare for a house of this age, 79 offers true one floor living. Rarer still, the private, interior serenity this house offers promises everyone their own space when needed and the spacious common areas can accommodate everyone when it's time to come together.
