In the beginning, the island was known as Jeremisquam, a nickname islanders still use for it today. The ''Indian Wars'' around 1668, resulted in abandonment of settlements, and it was not until the 1700's that the first permanent settlers took root. The island is very peaceful today, residents of the island are friendly and with a population of only 719 according to the 2020 census, you certainly won't feel crowded.
